Tech Coast Angels in the News

Fewer, but better? Alex Quilici and I pose for a photo at YouMail's head- quarters. The Orange County Register's Jan Norman quotes TCA's Luis Villalobos, Vantage Point's Craig Cooper and myself as we describe a different kind of year for Tech Coast Angels fundings. In 2007, as we close the books we funded 11 companies, about half of our previous two year average. "Is deal quality a problem? Is it member fatigue? Are the members becoming increasingly choosy?" It's been quite a while since I've talked to you but it seems like I
stay in touch by listening to your show. I am always impressed with
the sound quality but even more so with the editing.
Imagine my surprise when I opened my newspaper the other day and there
is a picture of a podcasting friend. I read through the article and
realized that it was all old news. I had already heard most of the
information on The Frank Peters Show. It just goes to show how behind
the times "old media" can be.
I have posted over 160 shows since I started podcasting back in March
2006. I have been posting two shows per week during the baseball
season and one during the off season. I have recently decided to only
post one show per week all year round. The reason for cutting back is
that I want to try doing the show for the Food Bank. It will be an
interview format and I would like to do the interviews in person
(wherever possible). Quite "Frank-ly" I would like to model the show
after The Frank Peters Show. I like the idea of the main topic and
then "... the man"
So, what is this second point of my email? I was wondering if I could
tag along with you on one of your interviews. I would like to see
your set up now that I know more of what I am doing.

Hi Frank,
I'm sure it wasn't your first media highlight, but I wanted to compliment you on the nice OC Register front page article. You looked great in the photo, too!

I saw this piece in Friday's REGISTER and I was a bit unclear as to how it came to be. In my experience, Jan is about the most straight-shoot'n reporter I've ever dealt with. She normally doesn't go digging for a negative "slant," if only she has access to balanced facts with which to work. That's why I'm not sure why TCA would want to put out a story about the decline in the number of deals in '07, at least until such time as the analysis had been done to be able to explain exactly why this had happened.
Perhaps, the real story here is more along the lines of TCA provides a record amount of overall funding in '07, including follow-on rounds; or, TCA more focused (as we darn well should be) on assisting portfolio cos build value vs. funding new cos; or, even TCA now more selective (as we should probably also be) in making investments.
After all, VC's and other private equity investors get measured on cash-on-cash IRR -- NOT how much money they manage to shovel out the door or how many cos they fund in a any given year. But none of that came out in Jan's piece because the analysis for '07 data was not yet finalized or complete. Just a thought for future dealings w/the media. Cordially, Matt

I was pleased to see the Register article about you and the Tech Coast Angels. I also read Jan Norman's article that discusses a very interesting Tech Coast Angel investment.
