Susan Solovic, A Leader of Distinction

ListenDownloadSusan Solovic

Susan Solovic was recently presented with a Leader of Distinction Award by the Institute of Women Entrepreneurs in Anaheim recently. Thanks to the SBA's Jill Andrews who helped arrange this interview with Susan.

She's the founder of SBTV.com, an online media company that mimics network television with an emphasis on small business issues. She enjoys telling the stories of successful entrepreneurs, "just knowing that someone else stumbled and fell, or failed, and now look at where they are today; I think that says to everyone: You know what? It's not a cake walk". So I have to ask her, tell me a story of the challenges you've faced. Be prepared to be inspired; you'll know why she's the award winner.

Very inspiring interview Frank! I had the pleasure of listening to Susan's keynote presentation at the IWE women's summit -- she's an amazing entrepreneur. Her book "Girl's Guide to Building a Million Dollar Business" remains one of my favorites.

Frank, thanks for introducing us to yet another resource - SBTV.COM

Mrs. Solovic's remarks about the poor education in her childhood county, and stating that we tend to emulate what we see reminded me of two things:
1. The book of Proverbs says "where there is no vision the people perish"
2. It also reminded me of a meeting I had with the VP of Academic Affairs when I was a student at the University of Guam. I was just discharged from the military as a disabled veteran. It's not easy to take advantage of the scholarship opportunities available to veterans. The fact that my parents live in Guam made that the easiest university for me to attend. I wasn't pleased with the degree choices and met with the VP of Academic Affairs and asked him why theydidn'tt offer more high paying degrees. At the time Guam had a mono-economy of tourism. He told me "why should I offer those degrees? People will just leave the island for those jobs." His point was that they will not contribute to the local economy. There are only so many restaurant and hotel manager positions, so people are actually leaving the island all the time. He had no vision of setting up students to be the most successful alumni possible who would then donate to their alma mater. He also had no vision for technology and patents and to do what universities like Stanford do and make tens of millions of dollars for the university. He became our congressman for several years. Then unsuccessfully ran for Governor on the premise that he would create high paying jobs. He is now the President of the University but I don't hear that he is doing anything in that capacity to increase the job prospects of the students.

I think Mrs. Solovic's remarks about citizen journalism speak to the importance and value of Frank posting comments from listeners on his website. Solovic talked about citizen journalism holding the media accountable. Lord knows we hear so much baloney from Angels and VCs on how to conduct business properly then it finally blew up in their faces when the VCs couldn't raise money and Angels groups started folding or worrying about membership.

Solovic was concerned about the credibility of citizen journalism in some cases. That sure is the case with a lot of the baloney that Angels and VCs have peddled. But I think if citizen journalists can hold the mainstream media accountable they can also hold other citizen journalist accountable as well.

So how about it Frank? If you agree with the value of citizen journalism in creating or maintaining accountability, why not express some of the counter points on your show?

I even offer myself as an interviewee. You can call me the disgruntled unfunded entrepreneur. If you or your listeners want to poke fun at my expense, that's fine with me. But let's get that dialogue you talked about going. Talking about getting a dialogue going is just cheap talk if we are not really going to do anything to get it going.
